The Rijksmuseum van Oudheden (National Museum of Antiquities) is the premier archaeological museum of the Netherlands, located in Leiden. With a rich collection spanning ancient Egypt, the Classical World, the ancient Near East, and the Netherlands through the prehistory, Roman era, and Middle Ages, the museum brings antiquity and archaeology to life for visitors.
Briefing
In 2018, the museum celebrated its 200th anniversary, marking two centuries of captivating audiences with historical treasures and knowledge.
To enhance the museum’s digital presence and facilitate an engaging experience for visitors, the museum sought a redesign and overhaul of its website to match its prestigious reputation and vast collection.
Concept
We were tasked with developing the technology and design for the new Rijksmuseum van Oudheden website. The goal was to create a modern, user-friendly platform that would serve as a digital gateway to the museum's vast collection of masterpieces.
The website needed to incorporate a seamless integration of the museum’s collection, online ticket reservation system, and library catalog, ensuring an intuitive and comprehensive user experience.
The concept centered around accessibility, visual engagement, and functional design. With a primary focus on showcasing the museum’s treasures and offering easy access to additional resources, the website would become a central hub for both visitors planning their trips and digital explorers of antiquity. The design aimed to balance the museum’s historical significance with contemporary digital solutions to meet the needs of a modern audience.
Result
The result was a powerful, fully integrated website that effectively reflects the museum's rich heritage while embracing modern technology. We successfully designed a visually striking interface that highlights the museum’s extensive collection, making it accessible to users globally.
Through advanced technological integration, the website now offers seamless connections to the museum’s collection, ticket reservation system, and the library catalog, allowing visitors to easily access resources and plan their visit. The revamped website has not only improved user engagement but also strengthened the museum’s digital presence as it celebrates its 200th anniversary, bringing the museum’s legacy into the digital age with elegance and efficiency.
